Interesting article.

I am new to ancient Christianity. I was catechized and baptized into the Orthodox Church earlier this year. Based on my limited knowledge, I must disagree with something you've written: "It has become now commonplace to assert that the dogma of the Apostolic primacy is the only real barrier to the recomposition of unity long desired by Catholics and Eastern Orthodox."

In my catechism, I was taught about many historic events that led to the split. These were not theological differences, but terrible acts of violence with Rome on the offensive. The violence has continued into recent centuries. I recall learning of a case in the 1800's, where Native Americans (of Orthodox faith) were viciously slaughtered by Jesuits in California when they refused to convert.

I understand the Orthodox viewpoint to be that Rome severed itself from the Body of Christ nearly a millenium ago, and since then has went into "left field" theologically, distorting the papal role among other heresies.

Indeed, if it were all about the pope, I believe the much yearned-for reunion would be in sight. Given the reality of the situation, my prediction goes for "not in our lifetime."

It is good that we have these forums, so people can share their views. I offer you my utmost respect. John
